Houston, Texas -
Starting the round 6 shots off the lead of round 3′s leader Matt Kuchar, Matt Jones’ level headed approach to Sunday’s round 4 found him finalise his round with a steady coolness.
Trailing Kuchar all the way through the round, Jones played a solid hand to shoot a final round 66 and a 15 under for the tournament. Holing a 46-foot, double breaking up and down hill putt seemed to be the final clutch from Jones as he waited on the 18th watching Kuchar finish his round. After a great tee shot and a dismal second shot that ended up in the water to the left of the green, Kuchar managed an excellent up and down to force the play-off.
The 18th, 1st and then the 18th again was to be played but the latter two were unnecessarily announced as Jones played an excellent 3rd shot from the right rough to birdie the 18th for the second time in the round. This left Matt Kuchar needing a hole out from the green side bunker, which stopped short and allowing Jones to claim victory at this week’s Shell Houston Open.
With the title of Shell Houston Open Champion and a $1.2 million cheque, Jones also picks up the last ticket to the Masters Tournament at Augusta National. This has been the second Sunday that Kuchar has been unable to convert to a first place finish, but leaves him in great form going into the Masters Tournament.
