Dublin, Ohio – Muirfield Village Golf Club

Hideki Matsuyama went into Sunday with a great chance for the win at The Memorial this weekend but had to contend with the likes of Bubba Watson, Kevin Na and the recent world’s no. 1 Adam Scott. Having that kind of pressure from fellow professionals wasn’t easy to deal with by the 22 year old Matsuyama. Kevin Na was the first in the clubhouse with a bogey free round of 64 to finish the tournament at -13.

Through some of the most bizarre incidents happening on the last three closing holes with Bubba Watson driving his ball well right and out of bounds on the Par 5 15th scoring a double bogey (7) to Matsuyama finding the water on the Par 3 and finishing the hole with a double bogey (5). On the 18th, a frustrated Matsuyama managed to break the head of his driver, a required club on the 18th if he was to make the play-off against Na. Adam Scott also struggled on the closing holes with an equivalent of 5 bogeys in the back nine taking him out of contention over the final two holes. Bubba Watson struggled to keep his emotions in check as he struggled with shot selection, laying up where he could have reached the green.

Waiting in the clubhouse to see in Scott, Watson and Matsuyama the chances of a play-off for Na became a reality only as the last putt for Matsuyama fell into the cup for birdie on the 18th. On the 18th, Matsuyama hit the bunker on the right leaving him with a very difficult shot to reach the green. Na meanwhile found the water hazard on the left, took a drop and played from the rough to just short of the green. Matsuyama managed to find the left of the green from the bunker, with his ball landing on one of the spectators on the way in. He made the up and down to win the play-off by one over Kevin Na to become the youngest winner of The Memorial Tournament at 22 years and 3 months old ahead of the previous youngest Tiger Woods.

Matsuyama picks up the all famous Golden Bear handshake, the title of The Memorial Tournament Champion and moves up to 13th in the world golf rankings.
