One of the latest campaigns sweeping across the world in the form of a bucket of ice and water, is the ALS awareness campaign. ALS or Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis often referred to as Lou Gehrig’s Disease is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord. With ALS affecting approximately 400’000 people world wide, someone is diagnosed with ALS every 90 minutes.
The #IceBucketChallenge is used as an interactive method for The ALS Association to raise funds for research and development for the treatment of ALS. The ALS Association is presently funding close to 100 active research projects, selected through a peer review process involving top ALS scientists. The campaign has shown success in excess of USD 42’000’000 and counting. With the donations coming from all around the world as well as from high profile contributors including one of the more talked about appearances from Rory McIlroy and Tiger Woods.
The Nike sponsored duo kicked up a storm on YouTube when they appeared together to accept the challenge and douse each other with freezing cold water and contribute to the ALS Association’s cause. Woods and McIlroy also nominated some more heavy weights to take the challenge, with George W. Bush and Rafael Nadal being among those called out.
