This weekend, Valhalla Golf Club played host to the final Major tournament of 2014.
For the third consecutive week on the PGA, Rory McIlroy, started day four in the lead. With Rick Fowler, Phil Mickelson and Henrik Stenson on his heels in the earlier groups. With high quality play coming from the players ahead it wasn’t going to be a walk in the park for The Open Champion. After Rory dropped two shots in the first few holes, crowds watched a flourishing Rickie Fowler hole putt after putt to put himself tied for lead with five other players. Phil Mickelson scrambled extremely well to play his roll as the Veteran in the lead and constantly applied pressure on the co-leaders.
At the turn, McIlrory clutched down, pulled a 3wood and hit the Par5 10th in two for an Eagle, to go one back of the leader Phil Mickelson. After keeping a steady, focused head throughout the tournament, Fowler lost his edge as he bogeyed the 14th hole Par3 and finished tied for third place(T3) with Henrik Stenson who also could’t convert his birdie opportunities. As darkness fell quickly on the late afternoon field, Mickelson kept the pressure on McIlroy with an 18th hole birdie but Rory made a great two putt to claim the PGA Championship. This is McIlroy’s second Major title for this year, with the win he moves to the top of the FedEx Cup standings. Mickelson who makes a massive jump from 84th to 42nd has also managed to qualify for the Ryder Cup for the 10th consecutive year, extending his American record.
